Week 3 in Lent:
Dying to Doubt, Living in Faith
On Ash Wednesday, we talked about dying to unforgiveness. The first week of Lent, we talked about dying to pride. Last week, dying to greed was the topic. This week, we're talking about dying to unbelief. As we have seen, each of these focal points requires a "putting off" and a "putting on" (Col. 3:9-10; Eph. 4:22-4). Less of a negative may be an improvement, but it never adds. You need both less of the wrong and more of the right.
When we think about dying to doubt though, it's not so simple. Faith is the undergirding characteristic of our relationship with God. "Whosoever believes" in Christ inherits eternal life (Jn. 3:16; Eph. 2:8). We have to think about faith a little differently than unforgiveness, pride, greed, etc.
Faith must be tested to increase. While challenges may lead us to awareness of our greed and need to change (for example), making the change requires a separate process. It's different with faith, as James 1:3 states, "...the testing of our faith produces endurance" (see also Rom. 5:3-5). Faith displaces doubt as we persevere through trials.
Dying to doubt is a process. And it is a process directed by Jesus--"the author and perfector of our faith" (Heb. 12:2). Unlike pride or greed: faith in God, weak or strong, is never a sin. It is however a limitation.
In Matthew 14:22-33, there's a story that reveals many things regarding the necessary strengthening of our faith. Join us for service today as we unpack these revelations for life.

Mid-Week Bible Study
Cornerstone's mid-week Bible Study will resume at 6:00 PM Wednesday, January 21st. We are going to be reading through a book entitled: One Another: the New Testament's Prescription for Transformation. Here are some thoughts regarding the substance and message of the study (copied from the book's page on Amazon):

If the writers of the New Testament are to be believed, your faith is not a private matter between you and God. It is the business of the family God has given you in the church and the faith and practice of your fellow believers is very much your business as well. God did not ransom souls; he redeemed a people for himself who would commit themselves to living together in ways that reflected God’s gracious welcome of each one of them, God’s love and forgiveness towards all of them, and God’s passion to see the image of his Son formed in each one of them and all of them together. In this book, David deSilva guides us through the images of the church that remind us that we are “in this together”—a family, a temple made of living stones, a single organism called “the body of Christ.” Each image reinforces our connections with and our obligations to one another, if the “new person” that the Spirit seeks to bring to life within each one of us is to flourish and reach maturity. He explores the apostolic vision for our interaction with one another, challenging us to be – and to receive – the gifts that Christ intends for us to be for one another, welcoming, loving, serving, encouraging, watching over, and restoring one another so that each individual disciple feels the strength, support, and guardianship of the whole body impelling him or her on to the full stature of Christ.
We would love to have you join us. Copies of the book are available on Amazon.com for $16.99.

Please note that our One Another study has paused for Lent and will resume at 6:00 PM, April 15th.
In the meantime, please join us (at the same day & time) for our Lenten study, entitled: "Dying His Death, Living His Life."

I look forward to sharing with you.
We are always more when you are here!
